Photobiomodulation has been shown to improve the quality of vision and is an eye care treatment for a number of issues. A start-up company in the United Kingdom has created a red light therapy product for exclusive use in treating the eyes with 670 nm light.

The company claims their 670 nm red light treatments will boost the eye’s cellular energy, slow retinal aging, and extend eye health.

My previous article titled “RLT Counteracts Age-Related Vision Loss” provided the basis upon which the positive effects of 670 nm photobiomodulation on the retina are highlighted.

While using photobiomodulation for retina-related issues has a long history, the Eyepower Red device is based on research from the Dept. of Ophthalmology at University College London (UCL).

Treatment Not A Cure

Eyepower is quick to point out that the UCL research has shown positive results in partially restoring lost night vision (I need this) and color perception; they do not claim that it provides a curative effect for any eye disease or visual impairment.

However, other clinical studies using 670 nm red light have shown positive effects for the treatment of the following eye conditions:

Age-related Macular Degeneration
Retinal damage in diabetes
Retinitis pigmentosa

Is it Safe?

The photo below shows the Eyepower Red white plastic diffusers in front of the 670 nm diodes incorporated in the eyewear.

Treating your eyes with 670 nm light is a daunting task to try on your own. What are the safe light intensity levels and exposure times? I read the literature and thought…
