According to the Midjourney.com website, Midjourney is an independent, self-funded research lab with 11 full-time staff led by founder David Holz. The Verge recently (Aug 2, 2022) published an interview with David Holz. I found a few of his comments insightful.
Shared creativity — The homepage on midjourney.com/app has a menu on the left side of its home screen. This menu has a “Community Feed” option that allows you to see top graphic images created by other users. More importantly, it allows you to look at or copy the command prompt that created that image. This feature accelerates your education to generate high-quality images.
Shared responsibility — See no evil. David does not want his Midjourney AI to add to the glut of misinformation or for the creation of photorealistic gore or pornography.
